Summary

May 5th marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP). The number of missing and murdered Indigenous people is disproportionately high, representing a clear pattern of systemic discrimination, prejudice, and violence. An annual proclamation demonstrates Parkland County’s commitment to support and raise awareness of this ongoing issue.

Proclaiming awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People is a step towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Bringing attention to this issue through a proclamation demonstrates a commitment to justice and equality for all residents, regardless of their background. It sends a message that Parkland County stands with Indigenous peoples in their efforts to address the systemic issues contributing to Missing and Murdered Indigenous People and to seek justice for the victims and their families. Many people may not be aware of the extent of violence faced by Indigenous peoples or the systemic factors contributing to it. By raising awareness, Parkland County can encourage dialogue, empathy, and understanding among its residents.
