Purpose

University of Alberta Aga Khan Pavilion - Funding Request

Summary

The University of Alberta (U of A) made a presentation to Council on April 10, 2018 regarding the Aga Khan Gardens Pavilion (attached).   The Pavilion is a key component of the Aga Khan Gardens development. The facility will enhance visitors experiences at the Gardens providing opportunities for programming, special events, exhibits, performances and private functions including seminars, meetings and workshops.

The University of Alberta has requested $250,000 from Parkland County for the Pavilion.  It is U of A's intent to begin construction this year with the intent to open in late 2019.

Parkland County, dependent on its level of contribution, will be entitled to space naming along with a plaque recognizing the contribution.  If approved Administration will develop an Agreement with the U of A regarding our funding contribution and space naming options for Councils consideration and decision.

Given that this is an unforseen expenditure for 2018, funding is proposed to come from the Environmental Restricted Surplus for the 2018 installment with the remaining four (4) years incorporated into budget and funded from Tax Levy.

Strategic Plan/Policy/Legal/Staff Implications:

Pillar - Complete Communities - We recognize the diversity of Parkland's communities, while fostering a united, shared vision for Parkland as a whole.

Guiding Principle - We offer a range of lifestyle choices, community services, and other amenities to meet community needs.

Financial Impact:

Cost:   $250,000

Source of Funding:  Environmental Restricted Surplus/Tax Levy
