That Council approve the following Beautification Projects and funding levels as per Council Policy C-RP20:
• Carvel to a maximum of $10,000.00
• Tomahawk to a maximum of $20,000.00.
Body
Administration Recommendation(s)
Administration supports the proposed motion.
Purpose
To approve Beautification projects as per Council Policy C-RP20.
Summary
The Beautification Grant Program was adopted by Council 2011 and is intended for Hamlets in Parkland County to be able to beautify their communities to improve tourism, business attraction and retention, promote greater community pride and improved quality of life.
Submitted projects include:
Tomahawk Beautification Initiative, consisting of 23 Community Members involved, who have been meeting for over a year to create a vision for the community. There are a variety of projects, including Community Entrance Signs to alert drivers they are entering a community, to welcome travellers and improve town pride. They intend on following that with a Creek Health Consultation to learn more on the health of the creek and safety for residents/tourists, area landscaping including a walking path with Art sculptures and children's play area, then street improvements including flower baskets, community clean up and improved community signage.
Carvel Initiative, consisting of 6 Community Members, who have expressed an interest in creating improved street appeal through benches, restored community signage and addition of flag poles and banners on light poles, done over a serious of individual projects over time.
Entwistle Initiative has 8 Community Members who are looking to complete a Skateboard Graffiti project, continuation of the trail system and some flowers and beautification of light standards.
All three are worthwhile projects, but due to financial and staff resource limitations only two projects can be accommodated for 2012. Tomahawk and Carvel are being recommended for approval.
Rationale is:
- there are two applications from Division 6, so are trying to spread the program funding across different Divisions,
- resources would be utilized by communities who have not already benefited from funding for community development type projects. Entwistle previously received County funding for the development of the Skatepark.
If there are dollars remaining at the end of these two projects for 2012, some financial assistance could move to the Entwistle project.
