Title

Parkland County Historical Resource Photo Project

Proposed Motion

That Council approve the Parkland County Historical Resource Photo Project.

Body

Administration Recommendation

Administration supports the proposed motion.

Purpose

To inventory potential historical assets in Parkland County.

Summary

The Historical Resources Act (section 26) empowers municipalities in Alberta to designate and protect municipal historic resources.  Municipalities interested in designating and creating a future for their historic places can follow a process outlined in Alberta Culture and Toursims "Creating a Future" resource; the first step of which, is to identify potential historic assets.

As an initial step, a public photo gathering project is being proposed.

The public will be invited to send in photos of buildings, other man made structures, places or artifacts; along with the municipal address, and any information about the asset.  Staff resources overseeing the project are the current Parks, Recreation and Culture practicum student and the Planning intern, who will collaborate in cataloging and mapping the data.

This initial inventory of the County's historical resources will provide:

- awareness of the number, types, distribution, kinds of resources (examples attached)

- scope for decisions relative to further ventures into historical preservation activity

- a gauge of community interest in historical preservation by the level of participation or dialogue generated by the project

- mapping of historic material as points of interest (tourism potential)

- a supplement to other historic materials

- an additional heritage dimension to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan

No funding is required as any staffing supports and promotional costs will be covered by existing resources.

Project will be completed with a report coming back to Council at the end of Quarter 3, 2016.
