Title

Proclamation - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Proposed Motion

That Council approve the proclamation to declare September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Body

Administration Recommendation

Administration supports the proposed motion to align with the Tri Municipal regions' events honouring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Purpose

Parkland County recognizes that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history is a direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 80, which called for a day to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools.

Summary

Proclaiming awareness for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a step towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Bringing attention to this issue through a proclamation demonstrates a commitment to the reconciliation process. It sends a message that Parkland County honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Many people may not be aware of the extent of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools. By raising awareness, Parkland County can encourage dialogue, empathy, and understanding among its residents.
