In accordance with Parkland County's Awards of Excellence Program Policy C-AD25, Administration supports the 100 Year Farm Family Award of Excellence presentation to the McDonald Family.
Purpose
To acknowledge and provide recognition to a Parkland County resident with significant achievements.
Summary
Dougal McDonald, originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, established a homestead in Parkland County in 1910 after relocating his young family from Massachusetts. Despite early personal hardship, including the loss of his wife in 1912, a pause in farm development due to his military service, and time as a prisoner of war during the First World War, he successfully returned to secure title to his land, SW 8-51-2-W5, and continued building his farm. The property became part of the Hansen’s Corner community and has remained in the McDonald family for over a century. Successive generations have contributed to a mixed farming operation and maintained strong ties to agriculture and the local community.
