Purpose

To provide an update on the Nature Policy Framework development that will support the conservation of Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs), including the draft Framework and proposed policies.

Summary

Parkland County Council has requested a review and update of the County's framework on environmentally significant areas to support responsible management of natural assets and amenities as per the 2024-2025 Council Strategic Priorities. The policy framework supports these outcomes under the founding principle of moving from identification of natural assets and environmentally significant areas to conservation/protection of them.  The Framework and associated policies build on the policy direction in the 2025 Municipal Development Plan while adding flexibility to the development process through the use of Innovative Conservation Approaches.
