Title
Cancellation of outstanding Property Taxes Due to Burn Down (Roll 20000785)
Proposed Motion
That Council cancel the outstanding taxes on Roll No. 20000785 in the amount of $2,302.96 due to burn down of a residence on 785-53222 Rge Rd 272.
Body
Administration Recommendation
Administration supports the motion.
Purpose
To cancel outstanding taxes and penalties on a tax recovery property that was completely destroyed on March 1, 2015, where the home owner did not have any insurance.
Summary
Financial Services received a request to release the tax notification on this property as a result of the residence being completely destroyed by fire on March 1, 2015.The date and circumstance of this fire have been confirmed with Parkland County Fire Services. The property was in tax recovery, and was scheduled for auction in August of 2015. Our tax recovery agency confirmed that the home owner did not have insurance and recommended we release the lien as the asset no longer exists for us to collect on. The lien has been released and the tax collection agency is foregoing their billing of additional fees or disbursements that resulted from investigation.
Alternatively Parkland County could pursue collection of these taxes through a private collection agency. Collection is very unlikely as the home owner did not have insurance.
Strategic Plan/Policy/Legal/Staff Implications
Pursuant to Section 347 of the Municipal Government Act, Council may consider tax cancellation, reduction, refund or deferral, with or without conditions.
