In accordance with the Municipal Government Act, Section 174(2), Council may by resolution allow for a councilor to be absent without disqualification.
Summary
Council Member Hoefsloot advised the Chief Elected Official that he may not be able to attend scheduled regular Council meetings for an undetermined period of time.
Under the Municipal Government Act Section 174(1)(d):
"A councillor is disqualified from council if the councillor is absent from all regular council meetings held during any period of 8 consecutive weeks, starting with the date that the first meeting is missed, unless subsection (2) applies."
Under Section 174(2)(i), Council may, by resolution, permit an absence of a member of Council:
"A councillor is not disqualified by being absent from regular council meetings under subsection (1)(d) if the absence is authorized by a resolution of council passed at any time before the end of the last regular meeting of the council in the 8-week period."
Council may therefore pass a resolution to permit Councillor Hoefsloot's absence for a period longer than 8 consecutive regular Council meetings as the length of absence is unknown at this time.
