Title
Muir Lake School Speed Warning Signs

Proposed Motion(s)
That Council support the Muir Lake School Council and Muir Lake Community League's request to Alberta Transportation to have the 30 km/h speed signs removed from the school warning signs located in front of the Muir Lake School along Highway 779.

Body
Administration Recommendation(s)
On April 16, 2012 representatives from the Muir Lake School, Muir Lake School Council and the Muir Lake Community League sent a letter to Alberta Transportation requesting the removal of the yellow non-enforceable 30 km/h tabs on the school warning signs posted along Highway 779.

Their concern evolves from the confusion with the yellow school zone 30 km/h speed tab (which is cautionary and non-enforceable) and the black-and-white 100 km/h regulatory speed limit sign (which is enforceable). They believe the conflicting signs are confusing to traffic along Highway 779 and traffic entering and exiting the school. The situation and concern became amplified when a school bus was involved in a collision on March 21, 2012 at approximately 2:50 PM while entering the highway.

Parkland County, Sustainable Infrastructure Services has reviewed the highway signage and agree that the conflicting signs confuse the traveling public. It makes it very difficult to ascertain the speed of oncoming traffic while entering and exiting the school property.

Purpose
Alberta Transportation has requested a letter of support to have the 30 km/h speed signs removed from the school warning signs.

Summary
The Muir Lake School Council and Muir Lake Community League are very concerned with the safety of the traveling public in front of the Muir Lake School. They have sent a letter to Alberta transportation expressing their concern with the conflicting speed signage in front of the school along Highway 779. Alberta Transportation is now requesting a letter of support from Parkland County to assist them in making their decision.
