Administration Recommendation
Administration supports that the Committee receive for information an update regarding Problem Properties, as presented. Administration concludes that the Municipal Government Act allows for municipalities to address problem properties through expropriation; and, that a resolution before the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Pembina Zone meeting is not required at this time.
Purpose
At the June 28, 2022 Council meeting, Council directed administration to gather information regarding addressing problem properties in Parkland County, and that a resolution be prepared to be presented at an upcoming Rural Municipalities of Alberta Pembina Zone meeting.
Summary
At the June 28, 2022 Council meeting, Councillor Wiedeman presented to Council to direct administration to draft a resolution and background for consideration at the Pembina Zone Meeting to amend the Municipal Government Act or introduce new legislation to allow for municipal expropriation of problem properties. Administration has investigated opportunities to address problem properties in Parkland County and have been advised that expropriation of properties exist in accordance with the Municipal Government Act.
