Senior Property Tax Assistance Options

Proposed Motion

That Council receive the summary of Senior Property Tax Assistance Options for information.

Body

Administration Recommendation

Administration supports the proposed motion.

Purpose

At the July 8, 2025 Council meeting, Council Member Kobasiuk presented a Notice of Motion requesting that Council direct Administration to bring back information regarding senior property tax deferral and rebate options.

Summary

The Province of Alberta offers a Senior Property Tax Deferral Program, which pays property taxes on behalf of eligible seniors through a low-interest loan (Attachments 1 & 2). This option is available to Parkland County residents.

Strathcona County and the City of St. Albert provide an additional property tax program for low-income seniors. Strathcona County offers a $250 rebate to eligible seniors, while the City of St. Albert provides a $200 rebate (Attachment 1).

Should Council wish to further explore the implementation of a program similar to that of Strathcona County or the City of St. Albert, Administration recommends that Council direct staff to bring forward options for consideration.
