Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton - Request for Funding

Proposed Motion
The Committee of the Whole direct administration to include $30,000 in funding for the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton in the 2017 Budget.

Body
Administration Recommendation
Administration recommends that the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton be directed to continue to access funding through the Non-Profit Grant Funding Program.

Purpose
Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (WRSE) made a presentation to Committee of the Whole on June 28th, 2016 which included information about their organization, the services they provide and a request for municipal support. This report is being presented to Committee of the Whole for direction regarding municipal support.

Summary
WRSE is a non-profit organization that provides compassionate care for injured, contaminated and orphaned wildlife and educates the public on the importance of wildlife in their communities. WRSE has been serving the Capital region and Northern Alberta for over 25 years. WRSE operates out of two locations; one in the City of Edmonton and the other, their rehabilitation centre, is located in Parkland County on an acreage owned by the National Conservatory of Canada.

WRSE has received funding over the past four years through the Non-Profit Organization Grant in the amount of $1,500. Should Council wish to continue to fund WRSE through this grant, they could approve the maximum funding accessible through this grant, which is $10,000.

At the June 28th meeting, WRSE requested $30,000 per annum from Parkland County to support their operations and services. Last year, 114 patients from Parkland County were treated by WRSE and a significant number of calls received from Parkland County residents.
