TransAlta Lease - Wabamun Lake South Side Boat Launch

Proposed Motion

That Council direct Administration to cease any further action relating to the Wabamun Lake South Side Boat Launch until such time as an alternate provincial and/or federal funding source is identified.

Body

Purpose

On September 25, 2018, Mayor Rod Shaigec presented a Notice of Motion to be presented to Council on October 9, 2018 regarding the Wabamun Lake South Side Boat Launch.

Summary

Previous Council Direction - Council Motion: May 22, 2018 - “That the execution of the land lease with TransAlta Corporation be approved for a twenty-five year term at a cost of $10,000 per year escalated at a rate of 2% every year beginning on the first anniversary date of the agreement for the development and operation of the Wabamun Lake South Side Boat Launch.”

As a result of the changes in circumstances arising from TransAlta’s announcement to retire Sundance Unit 2 made after the Council decision on May 22, 2018.  There is a strong possibility of further retirements that would place the County in a financially challenging situation.  Therefore, a recommendation to Administration is to defer the construction and be directed to seek funding from both the provincial and/or federal governments.

Any environmental assessments that have been completed will remain relevant if/when construction proceeds.
