Administration Recommendation

The Giese family’s connection to Parkland County started over 100 years ago when August Giese came to Canada from Germany in 1899.  August originally settled north of Spruce Grove where he farmed with his wife and six sons.  In 1908, they moved 15 miles south of Spruce Grove to NW 36-50-28-W4 in the Governor School District.  The Giese family was well known in this area as being one of the first to acquire a custom steam powered threshing machine.

Throughout the years the land has been passed from August to his son Fred, then onto his son Otto, and then to his son Gerry.  The family continues to farm this land, although we are sure they are happy that technology has improved and they are no longer using the steam powered thrashing machines to do the work!

The Giese family submitted an application under Parkland County’s Awards of Excellence program for acknowledgement under the 100 year Farm Family Award.  The Giese's are residents of the Division 4 area and are farming land that has been in the family since 1900.

The application met the criteria under Policy AD-025.  The Giese Family are eligible for this award.
