Title
Allowing Chickens on Smaller Residential Properties
Proposed Motion
That Committee of the Whole direct Administration to revisit allowing chickens on smaller residential parcels developing a report on potential options for Committee of the Whole consideration and discussion.
Body
Administration Recommendation
Administration supports the proposed motion as presented.
Purpose
To provide direction to Administration on this matter.
Summary
The current Animal Control Bylaw permits residents to have chickens on properties over two acres. In 2014 there was public interest in allowing chickens on residential properties under two acres. Public Engagement was conducted to confirm interest and in 2015 a Pilot Program allowing chickens on properties under two acres was presented to Committee of the Whole for consideration. The Pilot Program was not supported at that time.
A Parkland County resident made presentation to Council at their June 23, 2020 meeting seeking reconsideration of allowing chickens on properties under two acres in Parkland County.
Administration is prepared, with Committee support, to revisit this request by reviewing the information provided by the resident, reviewing and updating information gathered previously by staff and seeking feedback and input from Council Committees (Agriculture Services Board, Community Sustainability Committee). A report would be developed with options for Committee of the Wholes information and discussion.
Alternately, Committee may also choose to not approve the proposed motion resulting in no further work occurring regarding this item.
